What can a typical pre-intermediate student do when they reach the start of the B1 level?

I can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar subjects regularly encountered in work. I can understand the main points in a business presentation, meeting or telephone conversation when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. I can understand texts that consist mainly of everyday or job related language. I can understand the main topics in a clearly structured e-mail or report.

I can deal with some situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. I can enter unprepared into conversations on topics that are familiar, of personal interest, or pertinent to my job role.

I can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events at work. I can outline my job role and key responsibilities in simple terms. I can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. I can write simple, connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. I can write basic work e-mails, reports and presentations in a professional context.

  • I can conduct familiar exchanges on the phone using the appropriate form of language.
  • I can set a meeting agenda and use basic phrases in managing or contributing to a meeting.
  • I can express disagreement and agreement using a range of different phrases.
